Blake Herro is a cop in the Cleveland Police Force. Ever since he was a child he wanted to do right by the city he loved by cleaning up the streets and protecting its citizens. Red, a notorious mobster, has other plans.

On a bitter December night, ten police officers are drawn into a trap and killed by Red’s followers. Blake wants to bring down the Mob to avenge his fallen brothers and to prevent other cops from being murdered. Except the only way he can do that is by infiltrating the Mob.

Every minute he’s with these mobsters he’s in danger. Around every corner lies the threat of coming face to face with a gun. Will he make it out of the Mob alive or will he be their next victim?

EXCERPT:

Blake’s gaze continued to scan the area. Too many officers needed help. Blake strained his eyes to see if the nearest officer was still breathing, but the darkness and flashing lights obscured his vision.
Dread was ripe in his veins, twining his intestines into knots. The assailants who attacked the officers could be lurking nearby, watching and putting him in their sights. Being out in the open with nothing but his Kevlar vest as protection was not where he wanted to be, but the officer he was helping would bleed out if he moved.
Blake studied the officer. His lips were an unnatural shade of blue. He was shivering from the frigid December night as well as blood loss.
“Did you see them?” Blake asked. “Do you know who did this?”
            The officer’s lips moved.
Blake leaned forward, bringing his ear to the officer’s mouth. “What was that?”
The officer took a shuddering breath. “Red.”

BLOGFEST ANNOUNCEMENT:

Grab the badge to add to your post!

I am hosting my first ever blogfest!

Instead of a traditional blog tour for 30 Seconds Before, I want to have fun and do a blogfest with all of my blogging/author friends.

NOTE: Every post will include the blurb, cover art, and links for 30 Seconds Before, which I'll send to all the participants. Where you put this info in the post (at the beginning or end) is up to you.

Prompt: If I were a Mobster…
When? October 21st, 2016
*If you need to, you can post the day after.
Where? On your blog!

Post Ideas: I’m giving you creative freedom to create anything that comes to mind for the prompt: If I were a Mobster. You can share a poem or flash fiction piece about what you imagine yourself doing if you were a mobster.

Or share a detailed profile of your mobster self. This is what I’ll be doing.

Here’s an example of a mobster profile you can fill out:

My Mobster Name:
My Rank: (leader or minion)
Crime Zone: (city/state)
My Look/Disguise:
Weapon of Choice:
Mobster Vehicle:
What I’m Known For:
My Catch Phrase:
The Name of my Mob Leader:

You have complete freedom with the profile. Take out or add in. You can even turn the profile into a descriptive paragraph. Get creative with it. For mine, I used what I'm known for to create a clever profile.

I really just want everyone to have fun with this. Become someone new for one day in the blogosphere. Get in touch with your bad side. ;)

Won't you sign up...please?

The Book I Can't Give Up On / The Bowl and The Stone Cover Reveal

What was your very first piece of writing as an aspiring writer? Where is it now? Collecting dust or has it been published?

I was twelve when I started writing about an extraordinary girl in another world. Over the next few years, I wrote three books in that series. At the age of seventeen, I took on the task of rewriting that series, and I continued well into my twenties.

As a matter of fact, I recently revised that first book, and I'm trying to get an agent for it. The main character is Avrianna Heavenborn, who is featured in my short story Ghost of Death. One day, her book (series) will be published. I know it. :)

NEXT IWSG QUESTION: How do you find the time to write in your busy day? (Sept. 7th)

***************************

PROMO EFFORTS:

Facebook Party: I held a FB party with 6 AWESOME co-hosts. The turnout was great. I did a grand prize giveaway that required people to sign up for my newsletter for the chance to win. I got 16 new subscribers.

Lesson Learned: Try not to host a party when everyone is taking vacations, and make sure it's set to PUBLIC.

Social Media Push: Throughout July, I pushed one of my releases each week. That's one tweet a day, three posts a week on Instagram, one on FB, and one on Google+. Sales? NADA

Lesson Learned: Social media is not much of a strategy, though it does help to announce releases, sales, etc.

Newsletter Ads: I paid for a Coffee Time Romance’s newsletter ad located on their website. The first day it was up, the link for my ad was the link to another author’s book! I did another with The Romance Studio on August 1st that went into subscribers' inboxes. Again, no sales.

Lesson Learned: Newsletters that are full of ads won't get you noticed.

My Overall Mood: Discouraged.

They need help, but the one who might be able to give it is Trumps, a reclusive hunchback who doesn’t like people, especially kids. Are Sam and Nick brave enough to face him? And if they do, will he listen to them?

Their carefree summer games turn into eerie hauntings, and Sam and Nick learn more about themselves and life than they could ever have imagined.

Pre-order HERE today and enter the ghostly tale as soon as it releases.

About the Author:

Bish Denham, whose mother’s side of the family has been in the Caribbean for over one hundred years, was raised in the U. S. Virgin Islands. She still has lots of family living there whom she visits regularly.

She says, “Growing up in the islands was like living inside a history book. Columbus named the islands, Sir Francis Drake sailed through the area, and Alexander Hamilton was raised on St. Croix. The ruins of hundreds of sugar plantations, built with the sweat and blood of slave labor, litter the islands. Then there were the pirates who plied the waters. It is within this atmosphere of wonder and mystery, that I grew up. Life for me was magical, and through my writing I hope to pass on some of that magic.”

The Bowl and the Stone: A Haunting Tale from the Virgin Islands, is her third book and second novel. You can find Anansi and Company: Retold Jamaican Tales and A Lizard’s Tail, at Amazon.com.

Visit her blog, Random Thoughts.
She can also be found on Facebook.

Is Your Character Naked? + Cover Reveal for At First Blush by Beth Ellyn Summer

Many writers don’t bother to describe what their characters wear. This could be good and bad. Good because long-winded descriptions of attire is boring and unnecessary. Readers will skip it. Bad because this is an opportunity to express your character and show their personality with what they wear. Clothing says a lot about a person in real life, and it can do the same with characters in fiction.

Let’s take a look at how:

1. Is your character quirky?

A quirky character will use clothes and jewelry as an artistic outlet. They may mix and match patterns, wear combat boots with sundresses, pearls with overalls, or paint splattered sneakers. Anything that seems a bit odd, this character can wear it and will wear it proudly.

2. What does your character wear to work?

What we wear to work says a lot about us and our position. It also shows how seriously we take our role/success/responsibility. Imagine a man in a suit and tie, or a woman in a dress and heels. But different jobs require different apparel.

Doctors/nurses – scrubs, lab coat, sneakers.
Cops/firefighters – uniform, protective gear, boots.
Construction worker – shorts, cotton T-shirt, hat, work boots, towel/bandana.
Full-time writers – pajamas. :P

3. What does your character wear at home?

This one will really reveal who your character is if their work is a major part of the plot/story. As soon as your character comes home, does she kick off her heels and put on sweats and fuzzy slippers? Does he take off his shirts and pants and walk around in only his boxers? Show how comfortable they are and how they relax at home.

4. What does your character wear to a date?

If we really like someone, we dress to impress. Women might wear a low cut something-something or a short something-something. What your characters are doing also factors into what your character wears to the date. Jeans and a T-shirt is perfect for the fair. Black, flashy, and stretchy is good for a bar.

Use these opportunities to briefly describe what your characters are wearing, or more specifically the MC (or hero and heroine in a romance story). Not only does it reveal a lot about your characters, but it lends to the realistic factor. Because if you don’t mention your character’s clothes at all, is he/she naked throughout your story? Well…that’ll work for erotica. ;)
TIP #1 Clothing is especially important for historical stories. They won't wear what we wear now, so we need to know how they dress. Corsets and hoop skirts. Trousers and stockings. Cowboy hat and chaps. These details help enforce the time period and genre.
TIP #2: The same can be said for culture. For example, if you're writing about an Islamic woman, she'll need to wear hijab (headscarf), niqab (face veil) or burqa (full veil with a mesh screen to see out of).

QUESTIONS: What is your MC wearing right now in your WIP? If you’re a full-time writer, do you wear pajamas while your write?

Today I am happy to help Beth Ellyn Summer with the cover reveal for her debut novel At First Blush. Beth is such a sweetheart, so please show her some love. :)

At First Blush Cover
Genre: Contemporary YA

BLURB:

Lacey Robbins has one goal for the summer: hit one million subscribers on her YouTube beauty channel. Working as an On Trend magazine video blogger is just the platform she needs to get there, but falling for the cover boy, rock star Tyler Lance, was not part of her plan--especially since his dating history is longer than her Sephora wishlist.

She can't avoid him for long though, not when it's her job to film vlogs with him. As Lacey and Tyler grow closer on and off camera, her channel becomes popular for all the wrong reasons, and the two YouTubers she's working with officially hate her. Lacey's only solace is spending time with Kendall Wynn, On Trend's resident makeup artist. Kendall's scattered, carefree approach to makeup reminds Lacey why she ever picked up a tube of lipstick in the first place.

Nothing about this summer is going according to Lacey's perfect plan, and pretty soon she learns that filming makeup tutorials is easy. It's real life that could use some editing.

BIO:

Beth Ellyn Summer

Beth Ellyn Summer writes contemporary young adult fiction that somehow always includes the following elements: fame, makeup, and television. She graduated from Long Island University with a degree in Print and Electronic Journalism. Interning for Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon was the highlight of her college years. When she's not writing, Beth can be found swatching eyeshadows, solving Wheel of Fortune puzzles, and playing with her adorable cat, Penny Belle. Beth lives on Long Island in a cookie cutter town that, in an ironic twist of fate, doesn't have a single decent bakery.

Many writers don’t bother to describe what their characters wear. This could be good and bad. Good because long-winded descriptions of attire is boring and unnecessary. Readers will skip it. Bad because this is an opportunity to express your character and show their personality with what they wear. Clothing says a lot about a person in real life and it can do the same with characters in fiction.

Promo Efforts + A Love That Distrubs Cover Reveal

Let's
celebrate Medeia Sharif's new cover for her upcoming release A LOVE THAT DISTURBS.  Isn't it eerie and just a bit seductive? I think so.

A LOVE THAT DISTURBS by Medeia Sharif
Evernight Teen, June 17, 2016

Maysa Mazari is alarmed by her mother’s talk about arranged marriage. Meanwhile, as a hijab-wearing Pakistani-American, she wants to find love on her own. Her judgmental Muslim clique has protected her from racist taunts, although the leader, Aamal, is turning on her as Maysa strays from the group because of her attraction to Haydee.

Haydee Gomez is a former gang member and juvenile detention student. Now living with a clean-cut aunt, she wants to turn her life around, even though one person will never let her forget her roots—Rafe, her abusive pimp. Haydee attempts to pull away from a life of prostitution when she develops feelings for Maysa, although Rafe isn’t willing to give her up too easily.

Finding themselves in danger from Maysa’s friends and Haydee’s pimp, it’s apparent their love disturbs everyone around them as they fight to stay together.

The release for SEISMIC CRIMES came and went. It is now out there for everyone to purchase, read and review.

Analysis of My Release Day Promo Efforts:

1. Bloggers participating in A to Z included a promo in their S post.
Results: 20 people had signed up. All but 5 posted the promo I sent. I received a good response from commenters, which is always nice to see.
2. Thunderclap Campaign.

I had 5 different messages going out at all different hours on April 22nd.
Results: I had 120 supporters. 100 tweets. 31 Tumblr posts. 3 Facebook posts. Although those are great numbers, I saw nothing happen with it.
3. Announcements across all social media and Yahoo Loops (aka Yahoo Groups).
Results: In my announcements in the Yahoo Groups/Loops I included two pre-made tweets. Many authors I know tweeted for me and my publisher sent out many tweets. All of those got a bunch of re-tweets. This was definitely more effective than Thunderclap.
4. Pre-Orders.

When Seismic Crimes was up for pre-order, I did a cover reveal.
Results: The pre-release rank was pretty good.

Overall Result: I had an over-whelming amount of support in the blogosphere and twitter-verse, which led the charge for my release day. Definitly take advantage of this and not just Thunderclap, which I don't think is as effective since you can't add a picture or a link preview.

Q1: What does music mean to you?

Music is my escape. Almost like reading can be. But for me, music sinks deeper than the words of books. It inspires me, moves me, motivates me. I listen to music whenever I am creating something artistically, whether it’s while writing or drawing a fashion design. I use music, and the many genres, to influence my mood for whatever I have to create. The first song to really sweep me away and influence my writing was this:

Q2: What is your first music-related memory?

Sitting in the backseat of my mom’s car, driving somewhere in our relatively empty city (it had just started growing at the time), probably getting groceries or going to the library, and listening to the radio. Whenever I hear Celine Dion’s song The Power of Love, this brief memory pops up. It’s so simple and yet it makes me smile.

Q3: What was the first album you’ve purchased yourself?

When I was younger, I didn’t purchase albums because I didn’t have the money. The few I got when I was younger was purchased by my parents. The first album I bought and remember being so excited about came much later and was A Beautiful Lie by 30 Seconds to Mars. This song is the one that sold me on this band:

Q4: What was the latest music you purchased? (No online streaming or free downloads, I’m talking about cash here!)

1000 Forms of Fear by Sia. I listened to all of the songs on that album on Spotify, which was free for me to do. I even saved each song on my account, but I loved the album so much that I bought it. I usually don’t buy an album these days unless the music really speaks to me. Here’s a live version of the song that started it:

Q5: Which song did you listen to last? (No cheating, come out with the dirty pleasures!)

I had to check Spotify for this answer and it said: How Could an Angel Break My Heart by Charice
