My Writer's Backstory / Vlog + Tara Tyler's Windy Hollow Release Day!

Hi, everyone!

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. I have something different for you. I've been making and posting videos on my YouTube channel, and I just got the brilliant idea to post some of those videos directly on my blog as posts. *face palm* I will mix a few older fun or informative vlogs with new ones and try to put up vlog posts 2-3 times a month here on Write with Fey.

I've been trying to find some way to make blogging (for me) more fun. Ever since my worst case of depression a couple of years ago, blogging hasn't been the same for me. Then BAM! I got this idea (moments ago from typing this), and I think this may motivate me. I do really enjoy creating my YouTube videos, so this just may be the answer. Or, at least, a step.

ENJOY!

How to Design a Business Card + Question of the Month

Some people may say that a business card is the thing of the past, but I disagree. If you ever plan to do a giveaway, you can add a few business cards to the package you ship to the lucky winner. If you do book signings, you can have business cards on your table for visitors to grab. If you go to conferences, you can give a card to an agent. If you talk to a stranger at the post office or store and your career gets brought up, give that person your business card.

I have even gotten sneaky with my business cards. I’ve slipped one into the middle of books I checked out from libraries and enjoyed. I’ve left them on bookshelves at thrift stores and Wal-Mart. NO SHAME! :P

Here’s how you can design a business card:

1. Go to VistaPrint.com They have deals all the time that’ll cut down on the cost!

2. Decide what type of post card you want: Standard, Signature or Ultra Thick. I picked Standard for mine.

3. Look through the hundreds of designs. Having an idea in mind will help you narrow down the options. I liked the ones that allowed me to add my logo/picture such as the sparks that I’ve used on my blog and website.

4. After you have a design, select the color scheme you want and start making it your own.
TIP: There is a white line along the border. Make sure that the images you add will not be cut off in an awkward way because of this border (“safety line”) and make sure all of your words are inside it.

5. Add an image. This could be your author photo, a book image, or an image that has become linked with your image/brand such as my sparks.

6. Put your author name at the top and include your job title below it if you want. Example: Author

7. Have an author tagline? Put it on your business card! Mine is below my name. My author tagline is: Thrilling and Romantic with Heroines of Steel.
SEE: How to Create an Author Tagline
8. Add your social media links. You might not be able to put all of them on your business card, but you can put the post important one. I have my website, Facebook, Twitter, and blog URLs on mine.

9. Decide if you want a backside. It will cost more, so you don’t need it if you don’t want it. I opted for a backside to add more information and to make my card standout. On the back of mine I put a small bio (because there’s only so much you can get across about yourself with the scant info on the front) with two eBook cover images to entice readers.

This one came out a bit blurry but you get the idea. :)
TIP: Take your time to get it right!
10. Make sure everything is spelled correctly and placed neatly on your card then PURCHASE IT! You can decide on the number of cards you order. I first ordered 250 and those went quickly. Now I have 500. But you can start small as I had.

As soon as you get your cards, hand them out to your friends and family, and start leaving them everywhere!

QUESTION: Do you think author business cards are worth it? Do you have a business card?

QUESTION: If a friend came to you looking for advice on starting a blog, what three pieces of advice would you give them?

Last year I did a post FULL of blogging tips, so you can check that out here: Blogging 101

My 3 pieces of advice would be:

1. Come up with a catchy blog title and use that title in the URL. For example: Write with Fey, www.WritewithFey.blogspot.com

2. Set up an “About Me” page. You may say, “Why? No one cares to know anything about me.” But that’s not true in the blogosphere.

3. Participate. If you’re a writer, join the Insecure Writer’s Support Group and get to know the members one by one. Follow them and comment. Do the A to Z Challenge, which happens every April, and again…follow and comment. When you start visiting other blogs, you may come across sign-ups for blog hops, these are a lot of fun and many people do them, so join in and…yes, follow and comment.

How to Create an Author Tagline + The Muse Party Blogfest

An author tagline is a lot like a book tagline, but instead of it describing your story, it describes your writing.

For more information on a book tagline, GO HERE

An author tagline is commonly used at the top of websites and blogs, and in the signature of emails. It’s meant to give readers an idea of who we are and to tell them why we write what we write.
1.    Consider the common themes in your writing.
Example: romance, mystery
2.    Consider what tones and moods you use the most.
Example: dark, funny, heart-warming
3.    Do you frequently use the same settings?
Example: small towns, Great Britain, the South

4.    Do you tend to write about the same kinds of characters?
Example: cowboys, tough heroines
After you answer these questions brainstorm tagline ideas using a few of them. Author taglines are short and usually range from three to eight words.

Example: “Cowboy Stories with Heart.” would be perfect for an author who wants to brand him/herself in the romance and western genres.

My tagline is: Thrilling and Romantic with Heroines of Steel.

I've talked about my heroines being "Heroines of Steel" before. I came up with that thanks to a short essay I wrote about the spine surgery I had as a kid. It was titled Woman of Steel.

Sarah Foster and her muse Jordan created this fun blogfest for writers to talk about their muse. Well, how could I pass that up? To see the posts by the other participants, go HERE.

These are the questions:

1. Who is your muse?

My muse goes by the name of Ena, which was also the name of my imaginary friend when I was a kid. Ena tells me that she was my imaginary friend first so she could active my imagination to new, higher levels. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be as creative as I am now.  She went off to Paris when I was about eight and returned as my muse when I was twelve. True story.

2. What are you guys wearing?

I’m wearing black dress pants and a pretty shirt. Ena is in a beautiful dress of soft, pastel colors that blend together over layers of silk. She has her lavender hair flowing down her back between sheer fairy wings.

3. It's a potluck! Did you bring something yummy?

Of course, we did! I brought a cold rice salad, which is a lot yummier than it sounds. And Ena brought her favorite dessert...cheesecake.

4. Open bar! What are you both drinking (booze or otherwise)?

Booze isn’t really for us, so we’re both enjoying a cup of spiced chai tea with a splash of milk and a bit of sugar.

5. Wallflowers or social butterflies?

I’m a wallflower, but Ena is a social butterfly. She’ll flit around for me and come back to whisper some ideas into my ear about stories and characters.

6. What song(s) will you and your muse sing for karaoke?

Nsync. We will shout the lyrics at the top of our lungs and not even care what anyone thinks of our performance. Actually, everyone would probably join in. Admit it, you would.

1. Tearin Up My Heart
2.  I Want You Back
3.  Bye, Bye, Bye

7. What's your favorite party game?

Anything with words or something that involves writing or stories. Hey, I’m a writer! What do you expect?

8. Which one of you is more likely to end up dancing on a table top?

Neither of us. We are more restrained than that. We only dance on top of furniture when no one is around. :P

9. Has your muse been a good date and would you ever hang out with them again?

Ena is the best date! We hang out every single day. We’re like Siamese twins. ;)
