MY MEMORY: I was obsessed with The Nutcracker ballet when I was little. Every day for a year I watched an old tape and fantasized I was Clara. I didn’t know how to dance ballet, but that didn’t stop me from showing off my moves…karate moves. I would jab my fists in the air and punch and kick as gracefully as I could.

Doctor Mom Blog Hop / I Love You, Mom!

DOCTOR MOM BLOG HOP

Prompt: Share a favorite memory you have of your mom. Or just share a picture of your mom that you cherish. Or you can do both!

My mom and me. We were...and are...so much alike.

My mom is the author of Doctor Mom. I grew up watching her write these children's stories, featuring Gregory Green and Sammy, when I was in Kindergarten. She'd sit at our dining room table with her typewriter, a stack of papers, pencils, colored pencils, and laminating paper. That was where she'd write, illustrate, and bind her stories. She dreamed of publishing these stories and sent out many snail mail queries without success. So she read her books to my siblings and me, as well as to elementary school students.

She worked as a library assistant at my elementary school. Sometimes, my class (and other classes) would go to the library for reading time, and my mom would read her stories. She would even bring Sammy...not the teddy bear, but the real Sammy, a Cabbage Patch Doll. She'd pick a student to enact the story with Sammy as she read. I remember wanting to be the lucky kid to have that job, but she chose someone else to do it instead. I was disappointed, but in all fairness, it was the unbiased thing to do.

Years later, my mom visited my fourth-grade class to read one of her stories and lead us in some fun activities. We were joined by our neighboring class. In that class was a boy who liked to bully me on the school bus, so I was full of fear that he'd make fun of my mom to me later. If he did, I was ready to fight.

During her time with our classes, she picked a student to, once again, enact the story with Sammy. Coincidently, she chose the same student (who happened to be in my class again) to play with Sammy as she did all those many years ago. (It was even a different school.) She even read Slow Poke.

These are two of my favorite pictures of her.

Later, on the bus, I braced for what the bully would say. Sure enough, he sat down in the seat next to mine, and the first thing he said was: "That was your mom?"

I glared at him. "Yes," I snapped.

Then he surprised me with, "She's cool."

I was so proud of my mom at that moment. She had the power to make my bully nice. That's what a story and an author can do. It just so happens that the updated version of Pea Soup Disaster, the first adventure in this series, is about bullying.

As the years have gone by, I've wanted to help my mom to realize her dream of being a published author. I wasn't able to do it before, but I'm capable now, so we're self-publishing her picture books. Two to three a year. And next year we plan to add a chapter book to her credentials. After all my mom has done for me, she deserves this. And she deserves to see her stories in print.

Souper Blog Hop / Monthly Mishmash

Thank you to everyone participating in the Souper Blog Hop. If you're visiting, I hope you enjoy the recipes we share. Don't forget to check out my mom's picture book Pea Soup Disaster!

When I was little, I loved soup. I even would say it was my favorite thing to eat. And, yes, I did what Gregory does in Pea Soup Disaster and brought a thermos of soup to school for lunch. And...yes again...split pea soup was my favorite, followed by tomato soup.

I was about ten years old when I made soup from scratch for the first time. My mom would peel the potatoes and cut the onions for me, but I diced the potatoes and other vegetables by myself. I'd add carrots, celery, and diced tomatoes at the end. And I'd season it with way too many spices. My favorites were basil, celery seed, celery salt, onion powder, and garlic salt. So, my soup would be quite salty and a bit spicy, but I was very proud of it.

As a teen, my friends would beg me to make chicken Ramen Noodle because they claimed I made it so well. Once again, I'd add far too much seasoning. Yup, celery seed, garlic salt, and basil. Oddly enough, they loved it.


The recipe I'm sharing today does not involve celery seed or Ramen Noodle, though. Thank goodness!

Easy Pea Soup with Tomatoes

1 cup small, diced potato (peeled)

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 large tomato, chopped

1 can chicken broth

1 can Campbell's Condensed Green Pea Soup

1/4 teaspoon dried sage

Salt and pepper to taste

1. Mix 1 can Campbell's Condensed Green Pea Soup with 1 can of chicken broth.

2. Add potato, onion, and tomato.

3. Add dried sage and salt and pepper to taste.

4. Cover and simmer until potatoes are tender.

5. Fill up a bowl and enjoy!

MONTHLY MISHMASH

New Family Member - The last time I had a betta fish was about 9 years ago. He was named Poseiden after the Greek god of the sea. I've wanted another betta fish for awhile and finally got one. Meet Neptune! He's named after the Roman god of the sea. ;)

New Tattoo - I got this tattoo in honor of my paternal grandmother who died from ovarian cancer when I was one. This symbol is from her necklace. I wanted to start wearing it every day, but the first day I did, it got stuck on something and broke in three places. I put it back together but decided it would be safer not to wear it. Years ago, though, I had thought this symbol would make a cute tattoo, so that's what I did.

2017 Achievements + Flaming Crimes Blogfest

If you visited my post in December, you know that I struggled with depression last year, but I did a lot of awesome things in 2017, even with that burden.

- and then I went to my second book event in November

I did a lot I am proud of, and I am looking forward to 2018.

And kicking off 2018 is the release of Flaming Crimes!

Prompt: What is something ridiculous you would save if there was a fire?

After your family, pets, and important items are safe and sound (that includes anything writing related), what is the one odd thing you'd want to grab from your home?

MY ANSWER: When a brush fire threatened my childhood home, my mom grabbed a bag of potatoes from our house. That seems like a rather odd thing to grab, right? Well, she’ll tell you that she was a mother of five and wanted to make sure she could feed her kids. And just like that, saving a bag of potatoes sounds reasonable. 

It was this memory that inspired the blogfest prompt.

I was only a child when that fire surrounded my house, and I was terrified. I remember grabbing my blanket and my school backpack, but I was so scared that I didn't go back inside to grab anything else. If I had, I would've grabbed my favorite Nutcracker, which I still have. I believe it would be the one thing (after my pets and writing stuff) I'd want to save from becoming ashes.

I SURVIVED! Blogfest - How did Disaster Chrys Survive?

"This is Chrys Fey reporting for Disaster 5 News. I am in Central Florida where a tsunami hit yesterday morning. I have my doppelganger with me, Disaster Chrys, a survivor of the tsunami. Diz, can you tell our viewers what happened, and how you survived?"

Diz: “You probably won’t believe me, but I’ll tell you anyway.

“I was walking along the shore, collecting shells, when the water sucked back out so fast and far that I could see reefs, the breaker, and several fish flopping on the sand. A gust of wind tossed my hair over my head and caused me to stumble. I looked toward the ocean to see a giant wall of water. At once, it was frightening. And then magnificent; a humpback whale curved over the top. Its tail waved at me and splashed salt water into the air. Along the crest, dolphins jumped like synchronized swimmers performing a routine.

“Something told me not to run, that I’d be okay. The water bubbled up my body, but it didn’t toss me around. Instead, it lifted me high, as if putting me on a watery throne. It swept me forward, making me feel like Poseidon’s Queen.

“I peered at the gentle waves lapping around my hips and saw a school of mermaids below my feet. They waved at me, beckoning me to come play with them. So, I let my body sink under the surface. There was a mermaid with a black tail spotted with white barnacle, a mermaid with seaweed braided through her hair, and another with starfish attached to her arms.

“A merman with cobalt blue hair and a crown of coral atop his head swam up to me. He put his mouth to mine, granting me his breath. He held onto me until the water stopped. Then he and the other mermaids lifted me onto a patch of green land. Before me stood a pearly-white unicorn. She bowed her head and lowered so I could climb onto her strong back. My Mobster Name: Disaster Chrys (given to me by Sage), but those in my Mob call me Diz for short.

My Rank: I’m the second-in-command, of course. I don’t want to have the pressure of ruling an entire Mob, but as co-leader I get to have a lot of fun issuing orders, intimidating the boys, and being an overall bad ass chic. *wink*

Crime Zone: Central Florida

My Look: Sleek, neon green hair past my shoulders. I realize this makes me easily recognizable and even visible, but I’m notorious for it. People say they only catch a glimpse of green hair when I carry out my plans. I have a small spiral (the symbol for a hurricane) tattooed on the side of my right cheek. I wear all black and coral lipstick for a feminine touch.

Weapon of Choice: Long, extra-sharp pencils. I have a belt full of these “writing utensils,” which I can throw like darts or use as impaling instruments.

Mobster Vehicle: A black four-wheeler. I don’t drive on the highways or main roads, because I don’t want to be spotted, so I use dirt roads and back-roads.

What I’m Known For: Leaving a note scribbled on a torn piece of notebook paper. What do these notes say? (Check out my catch phrase.)

ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ve kept it a secret, but I am now confirming San Francisco as the main setting for the sequel to Hurricane Crimes. And since I announced earthquakes as the disaster during A to Z, I will reveal the title....

SEISMIC CRIMES!

San Francisco is a popular city in California. Several things make this city unique. If you’re writing a story set here, make sure to mention at least a few of these:

1. Golden Gate Bridge

California is known as the Golden State, so it’s no wonder why the bridge that spans from San Francisco to Marin County is called the Golden Gate Bridge, although it’s really more of an orange color. This bridge is 1.7 miles long and can withstand winds of more than 100 mph.

FACT: The Golden Gate Bridge is the most publicized suicide location, averaging one jumper about every ten days.

2. Fog

San Francisco is known for its fog that hangs over the city. If your story is set here, you should at least mention the fog San Franciscans live with everyday.

3. Cable Cars

A popular way to travel, other than walking, is the cable car system that covers nine miles. The sounds of the humming cable and the clanks of the bell accompany cable cars wherever they go. If your MC lives here, have him/her hop onto a cable car with ease. It’s $6 per ride though!

4. Chinatown

Packed with open-air markets, tea, noodle and Dim Dum shops, Chinatown is a huge tourist attraction. You’ll see racks of Chinese silks, shell fish in huge tanks, and jade trinket being sold. You could hear metal crickets and smell incense mixed with cigarette smoke and the odor of fresh fish. Portsmouth Square, a popular spot in Chinatown, is where you can find men huddled over Chinese chess tables.

TIP: Use all of the five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) capture the essence of Chinatown.

5. Union Square

At the heart of San Francisco is Union Square, where Macy’s Saks, Neiman-Marcus, and Tiffany & Co are located. Many people go to Union Square to window shop and people watch.

6. Alcatraz

The prison notorious for housing murderers like George "Machine-Gun" Kelly and Robert Stroud aka "The Birdman of Alcatraz.” Alcatraz would be a spooky setting for a horror story. They do tours there and there are many reports of Alcatraz being haunted.

7. North Beach

Your characters can enjoy a night of cocktails and live music in this small Italian neighborhood. It’s also a great place for coffee.

TIP: Some more popular places in San Francisco is the Financial District where you can find the Transamerica Pyramid, Golden Gate Park where you can find a Japanese Tea Garden, Twin Peaks, Pier 39, and Fisherman’s Wharf.

8. People

San Franciscans have a live-let-live attitude. Or so I’ve read. You can find all sorts of people here” business men and women in suits, surfers, bohemians, transvestites in evening wear, tourists, musicians, homeless people, and even Pink man, a man who reportedly rides around on a unicycle in a hot pink unitard and cape. Most people in California (not all, mind you) eat organic food, do yoga, support the Democratic party, and are environmentally-friendly.

9. Weather

San Francisco’s average high is 63 degrees Fahrenheit with an average love of 51 degrees. So dress your characters accordingly. Your heroine could wear leggings or pantyhose with her skirts/dresses. She may also keep a light cardigan/jacket with her. The warmest days are in September and October. Your heroine can take advantage of that warmth with tank tops and strapless ensembles. 

10. Earthquakes

The San Andreas Fault cuts right through most of California. Small, undetected quakes rumbled under the surface every few days in the Bay Area. Every year only a few quakes are strong enough to be felt. Most aren’t severe but there’s a chance that a quake of 6.7 or greater on the Richter scale could hit the Bay Area before 2052.

Michael G D'Agostino is starting up a monthly blog hop called "Question of the Month." On the first Monday of every month we have to answer a question that Michael picks. It sounded like fun, so I hopped on. :) 

The Question: If your house caught on fire, what's the one thing you'd grab before running out?

My Answer: (Sorry it's long...)

I recently asked this same question for my A to Z post about Wildfires. This is a tough question to answer because I’d want to save my four cats. I’m also a writer and would want to grab my writing stuff. Oh and I'm terrified of fires....

When I was a kid, a wildfire almost took my childhood home and an electrical fire started in that same house a few weeks later. In Florida, fire season is bad, especially in my city. I prepare for fires year-round by keeping all of my notebooks and flash drives in a backpack, so I’d grab that bag and open the sliding glass do to let my cats out on the porch. Usually, they are out on the porch in the blink of an eye. I just hope they’ll seek shelter on the porch instead of hiding inside, because I know they’d be frightened.

Anyway, I am panicking just thinking about this. Thanks, Michael! (Kidding!)

How to Create an Author Tagline + The Muse Party Blogfest

An author tagline is a lot like a book tagline, but instead of it describing your story, it describes your writing.

For more information on a book tagline, GO HERE. 

An author tagline is commonly used at the top of websites and blogs, and in the signature of emails. It’s meant to give readers an idea of who we are and to tell them why we write what we write.

1.    Consider the common themes in your writing. 

Example: romance, mystery 

2.    Consider what tones and moods you use the most.

Example: dark, funny, heart-warming

3.    Do you frequently use the same settings?

Example: small towns, Great Britain, the South 

4.    Do you tend to write about the same kinds of characters?

Example: cowboys, tough heroines

After you answer these questions brainstorm tagline ideas using a few of them. Author taglines are short and usually range from three to eight words.

Example: “Cowboy Stories with Heart.” would be perfect for an author who wants to brand him/herself in the romance and western genres.

My tagline is: Thrilling and Romantic with Heroines of Steel.

I've talked about my heroines being "Heroines of Steel" before. I came up with that thanks to a short essay I wrote about the spine surgery I had as a kid. It was titled Woman of Steel.

1. Who is your muse?

My muse goes by the name of Ena, which was also the name of my imaginary friend when I was a kid. Ena tells me that she was my imaginary friend first so she could active my imagination to new, higher levels. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be as creative as I am now.  She went off to Paris when I was about eight and returned as my muse when I was twelve. True story.

2. What are you guys wearing?

I’m wearing black dress pants and a pretty shirt. Ena is in a beautiful dress of soft, pastel colors that blend together over layers of silk. She has her lavender hair flowing down her back between sheer fairy wings.

3. It's a potluck! Did you bring something yummy?

Of course, we did! I brought a cold rice salad, which is a lot yummier than it sounds. And Ena brought her favorite dessert...cheesecake.

4. Open bar! What are you both drinking (booze or otherwise)? 

Booze isn’t really for us, so we’re both enjoying a cup of spiced chai tea with a splash of milk and a bit of sugar.

5. Wallflowers or social butterflies? 

I’m a wallflower, but Ena is a social butterfly. She’ll flit around for me and come back to whisper some ideas into my ear about stories and characters.

6. What song(s) will you and your muse sing for karaoke?

Nsync. We will shout the lyrics at the top of our lungs and not even care what anyone thinks of our performance. Actually, everyone would probably join in. Admit it, you would.
