Real Life Inspirations in Tempting Friendship

When it comes to my writing, I enjoy slipping little details from my real life into the story. It may be a name for a character mentioned in passing or somewhere the main character went that I’ve been to. They’re like little Easter eggs that people in my life may recognize. Here are seven that I slipped into Tempting Friendship.

Gerry the Beer Snob

Okay, so my husband isn’t exactly a beer snob, but he likes to try different beers and judge them. He would get along with Gerry great because they could discuss the different flavors of beer and he could trust Gerry to give him a good recommendation. Also, it’s a joke between hubby and I that any spilled alcohol is alcohol abuse.

Grand Taqua Falls

GT Falls is a mash up of Grand Rapids, where I have family, and Tahquamenon Falls which is a huge waterfall and tourist trap near me. Other things in GT Falls that I pulled from real life is 28^th Boulevard. There’s a street in Grand Rapids called 28^th Street and it’s so busy that any construction has to be done at night. My grandma used to live on Hazel Street, and my last job was on Spruce Street.

The Crown’s Inn

The restaurant is based on one I worked at called Weber’s Rustic Inn, but Adira’s office is based on the office at my last job, Penny’s Kitchen. It was tiny and cramped with a filing cabinet that had stuff piled on it.

Rum and Light Coke

No, I’ve never heard of a customer saying this, but working in restaurants since I was 18 I have heard some pretty weird requests. Like the fish tastes too fishy. That did actually happen. Cajun spice is too spicy. A friend once asked for pasta primavera without the veggies. That’s the point of the dish. Otherwise, you’re just having alfredo. Then there’s the customers who order an item and when you bring it out say, “I didn’t order that.” That one happened a lot.

Quinn and Gerry Wanting to Kick Out Customers

That happened to me a lot during summer time. Restaurants are crazy busy where I live then because of tourists, and after four hours of non-stop cooking, you just want them all to GO AWAY. More than once I begged waitresses to make it stop or to lock the door. If I was cranky, I’d swear about customers.

Keane Not Wanting to No-Show.

You know what really sucks? When your coworker doesn’t show up for their freaking shift! Yeah, there’s a reason Keane doesn’t do it because I’ve had it happen to me countless times and would never dream of doing it to another person. You’d think this would just happen with slackers, but no, I once had a professionally trained chef no-show.

Quinn and Keane

I had real people in mind when I was imagining them. YouTubers, Liana Kerzer and Jeff Holiday where kind of who I pictured when writing. Of course, when it came to the cover, I couldn’t find a model with long dread locks and no shirt, so I had to make do.

Other Easter eggs are: Geralt is a reference to The Witcher games, as is Witch Hunter 3, GTA, and Street Rage are references to real games.

I hope you enjoyed learning about the Easter eggs I threw in the story.

Fighting with the Ending / Guest Post by Patricia Josephine / Mistakes of the Past

Fighting with the Ending:

I’m a panster, so when I write, I don’t have an outline or even a plan for the story. What starts me is a character or a scene that excites me and I can’t get it out of my head fast enough. I start writing with zero direction. That often means I have no idea how to end the story. I don’t figure it out until I’m there, staring at the screen, and wondering how to save the day.

The ending to Mistakes of the Past went through quite a few different versions before I finally got it right. Luc went from three chances at redemptions to one, back to three, then finally one. There was a sex scene, but that got axed. Another scene moved from one location to another. Parts got cut then added back in and adjusted to fit. Whole elements that I researched were discarded. Even lines I loved didn’t make the final cut.

It was quite the evolution. Sometimes you have to fight to get it right, to find the perfect resolution that readers love. I hope this ending is one that readers will enjoy. At the very least, I enjoy the ending. That’s got to be a good sign, right?

QUESTION: Have you ever struggled with the ending for a story you were writing?

Abducted Life by Patricia Josephine - Subtlety

NOTE FROM CHRYS FEY: Patricia let us choose from a collection of pre-made posts. I chose this one because I noticed my name was in it. ;)

Subtlety in Abducted Life

One thing readers may notice when they dig into Abducted Life is the strange thing I did with my chapters. Instead of the traditional Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and so on, I started with Chapter: Xxxx. The next chapter is Chapter: Savannah. It alternates with whose POV the story is in. After a certain point where I stop using Xxxx. The reason for that is I didn't want Evan's name used up until a certain point. His name is in the blurb and mentioned once in that first chapter so readers know who's POV we are in when not in Savannah's, but after that, you won't read it again for a while.

I intentionally avoided using it because Savannah and Evan avoided using it. The chapter titles are meant as a way of showing how Savannah struggles with thinking he's dead and Evan feeling like he's no longer human, and therefore, himself.

Using subtlety is a tricky thing in writing. I know what I want to portray, but will the reader get it. My editor, Chrys Fey, had made a note about it and I had to explain it to her, but other beta readers seemed to have gotten it. I suppose it will depend on the person if they get what I'm going for or not. (Personally, I probably wouldn't if I wasn't the writer. I can be incredibly oblivious sometimes.) At the very least, if I have someone not get it and contact me asking about it, I now have a blog post to direct them to.

Review for Gabriel (Path of Angels - Book 4) by Patricia Josephine

MY REVIEW:

In this last installment of the Path of Angels series we have Gabriel's story. In the previous stories, Michael, Zadekiel, and Jophiel found love and fell from grace. The last brother left to fall, so they can battle Uriel and stop him from setting Lucifer free, is Gabriel. Gabriel's anger over being chosen, over his set path, and even in God is refreshing. But it is his anger that could be his downfall.

One thing I found interesting about Gabe (other than his anger) was the secrecy behind his divine gift or "weapon." All of his brothers have angelic gifts and weapons that they use when they fight Fallen, but we never so much as glimpsed what Gabe's could be. Until now. Another thing that held my interest were these nagging questions: what type of person would steal Gabe's heart? Who would he fall in love with? Well...not one but two! Which makes perfect sense.

This story also combines a sweet romance between Alexander Cook and Charlie, a girl who doesn't talk. Their relationship is super cute. I loved how Patricia Josephine used facial expressions and body language as Charlie's way to communicate. She was truly a lovely character with her silence, sparkling eyes, and blushing cheeks.

As Gabe and his brothers try to complete their destiny, there is blood shed, shocking turns, and new secrets. And I loved how all of the minor characters (not so minor in my eyes!) had bigger purposes.

Angels, love, and sacrifice. Hell, death, and pain. This story has it all! And it is my favorite one of the series. :)

1. What is your job?

Joe: *Plants hands on hips* I fight evil that lurks in the dark! Or, ya know, *shrugs* Fallen angels.

Joe: Some punks were messing with her. Who picks on a pregnant lady? Really, I should have kicked their asses.

5. You should have! What was your first impression of her? (Other than her being pregnant.)

Joe: That she is an angel. I mean, she really is, but at the time I didn’t know, so… *shrugs*

6. What kind of trouble do the two of you get into?

Joe: I take offense to that question. Mary and I are angels. A.N.G.L.E.S. Do you not see my halo? *circles finger over head*

7. Haha! I guess we’ll skip that one. What moment of Jophiel, Path of Angels was your favorite?

Joe: That’s kind of tough to answer because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Hmmm. There is a great bonding moment between me and another character. *wipes eye* It’s just heartwarming.

8. Is there anything you did in Jophiel, Path of Angels that you would change if you could?

Joe: Given my ability is being able to see events from the past, I’ve learned to not worry about what’s happened. You can’t change it, so why worry?
