EXCERPT:
Write a Letter to Your Fear
I don’t know where I read about this practice, but I discovered it somewhere. Late July of 2014, I wrote a letter to Fear, as if it was a living, breathing being; and it is, it really is. In the letter I mentally donned boxing gloves to go one-on-one with my fear…my depression. The words I wrote are fighting words. I wanted my fear to know I was serious, that it wouldn’t beat me. Reading it back now, I believe myself, even if there was niggling doubt buried somewhere beneath the words when I penned them. My sentences are fierce, and I picture a strong woman writing them, although, at the time, I lived my days feeling small and insignificant.

Here’s my letter:
Fear,
You think you’re smarter than me? You think you can beat me? Well, I’ve got news for you. I have strengths you’ve never considered. Every time you give me a dose of poison, my body takes it in, and now I am immune to the fear you administer.
I’ve lived through a childhood riddled with fights.
I’ve lived through my half-brother’s abuse.
I’ve lived through the immense pain of spinal surgery.
I’ve lived through the period when I didn’t have a place to call home.
I’ve lived through the shame of not having a high school diploma.
I’ve lived through depression.
I’ve lived through betrayal.
I’ve lived through hopelessness.
I’ve lived through the ups and downs of being a writer.
I’ve lived…
And I will continue to live through my current hardships.
I’ll live through this poverty.
I’ll live through this stress.
I’ll live through it all.
You can throw more obstacles, more pain, more everything at me, but I’ll live through all of that, too. Just watch. Watch and see how you will fail miserably in your attempt to break me fully, forever. It won’t work. I won’t allow it.
I will not fear failure.
I will not fear being alone.
I will not fear publishing another book.
I will not fear YOU!
Because, you see, all the fear you have given me has made me infinitely stronger than I ever would’ve been without it. So, yes, I will live.
Sincerely,
Your Worst Enemy
Chrys Fey

Write your own letter to Fear. Start with a list of the hardships you’ve survived so far. Then look to your current hardships and make it clear to your Fear that you won’t let it beat you with those weapons. End your letter with statements about what you won’t fear anymore.
Keep that letter. Later, when you come across it again, you’ll see a strong person behind those words, stronger than you may feel while writing them, because we all have strength in us, even when we feel the most powerless. It’s in you at this very moment.

In my journal, there’s a note scribbled atop a page a few sheets beyond this letter which says, “I’ve learned to rely on myself, to pursue my dreams no matter what, and that what others do to me makes me stronger.”
What have you learned?

  4. That is a good idea. They say to write letters to people you can't talk to. I hadn't considered writing letters to emotions that you feel are overwhelming.

  12. I like the idea of writing a letter to fear. We live in a world where fear is used to manipulate us (whether it is buying tooth paste or to vote for a candidate). Much of our fear is not real and we could all understand this, we'd be a lot better off as a nation.
