Finding a body in the freezer of the family deli isn’t the way Madonna San Valentino planned to start her day.

Adding insult to injury, the investigating detective is the one guy she’s never been able to forget. After seven minutes of heaven in the back seat of his car when they were teenagers, Tony Roma skipped town without so much as a thanks for the memory.

Just when Madonna thinks the present situation can’t get any worse, Tony is ordered to go undercover at the deli to ferret out a killer. Forced to work together, she vows to keep their relationship cool and professional. But with the sexy, longing looks he tosses her at every turn, Madonna’s resolve is weakening.

With Christmas drawing closer and Tony’s investigation taking an unexpected turn, Madonna is at her wit’s end. Can she really be falling for him again? And will he wind up leaving her broken hearted and alone like the last time?

SCENE SPOTLIGHT:

“While the coffee perks, why are you here at six a.m. on a Sunday morning? You usually sleep until noon on the weekends.”

Raffie side-eyed Tony then dragged his gaze to me. He was still pouting like a three year old but I was used to it. After a moment the deep, dramatic sigh that shot from him told me he was going to behave.

“After Pop’s announcement the other night I wanted to discuss something with you but I wanted to do it,” he glared at Tony again, “in private. I figured you’d be getting ready to head over to the store to set up for the day and this would be a good time. I never expected, well.” He shrugged.

“You never expected your sister had a life that didn’t revolve solely around your family,” Tony said, rising from the table because the coffee was ready.

Raffie’s nostrils flared. When he shook his head and didn’t say anything I was, truthfully, amazed at his restraint.

“Yeah, well, I guess that’s true.” He zeroed in on me again. “How long has this been going on?” He thrust his chin at Tony, then pointed at me.

“None of your business,” Tony said before I could tell my brother the same thing. Tony brought the pot to the table, filled my cup, then my brother’s and his own, last. As he sat, he added, “You’re sister’s an adult, Rafael. She doesn’t answer to you or anyone else about what she does in her private life.”

My brother snorted. “Try telling that to my brothers and parents.”

“I have no problem doing that.”

“Hello?” I said, flapping my arms until they both looked at me. “Can you see me?”

“Of course we can.” Tony’s brow crinkled with confusion.

“Really? ‘Cuz the way you two are talking about me I wondered if I suddenly went invisible.”

He had the grace to look embarrassed before he grinned.

Shaking my head at him, because really, what else could I do, I turned my attention to my brother.

“Do I question you about the girls you date?”

“No.”

“Then show me the same respect.”

“This is different, Donna. You never walked in on me with a girl.”

“Candace Ferrara,” I said without a moment’s hesitation.

Raffie’s mouth fell open then slammed shut. His olive complexion blanched to the color of bleached wheat, all but his ears, which reddened like Rudolf’s nose guiding Santa through the night.

He planted his elbows on my kitchen table and hunched over, cupping the back of his neck with one hand.

“Jeez, Don. What was I? Sixteen?”

“Fourteen.”

Tony’s low whistle forced me to turn to him. One corner of his mouth tilted up as he was about to take a sip of his coffee. “Early starter,” he mumbled into his cup.

“It’s not the same thing and you know it,” Raffie whined.

“No, you’re right,” I said. “I’m in the privacy of my own home, not in the room I grew up in in our parent’s house, and I’m more than twice the age you were when I caught the two of you huddled under the sheets. That means I’m an adult, not a minor, like you were.”

When the pout returned I knew I’d gotten my point across.

Tony slid the bakery box towards himself, opened it, and pulled one of my cousin’s amazing donuts onto a dish.

“Why don’t you tell me what you came here to?” I asked my brother.

Scene Questions:

1.   Which actors/actresses would play the characters present in this scene?

Madonna would be played by Mila Kunis, Tony by David Gandy and Raffael by Paul Walker. You van visit my pinterest board for their pictures, here: https://www.pinterest.com/peggyjaeger/mozzarella-and-mistletoe/

2.   What inspired this scene?

I needed a way for Tony to show Donna she should stand up for herself in her family and starting with her favorite brother was the easiest way to do that. Donna has always fallen on her sword for her family and they’ve never seen her as a self-sufficient  independent woman. This scene helped her start to show that.

3.   What do you love the most about this scene?

How Tony isn’t intimidated by a man almost 20 years his junior who is also a body builder. And I also love the way Tony sticks up for Donna.

4.   If you could rewrite this scene, would you change anything?

No. All the reactions in this scene run true to character. Donna is worried about her brother’s opinion of her; Tony wants to show her how to stick up to her family, and Raffie is acting like the big brother protector instead of the littlest brother.

5.   Can you tell us a secret about this scene?

Right before this scene took place, when Raffie rang the doorbell, Madonna tried to get Tony to leave or at least hide in the bedroom so her brother wouldn’t know she’d had a guy spend the night. Tony refused, telling her she was a grown woman and not under anyone’s thumb.

Family and food play huge roles in Peggy’s stories because she believes there is nothing that holds a family structure together like sharing a meal…or two…or ten. Dotted with humor and characters that are as real as they are loving, she brings all topics of daily life into her stories: life, death, sibling rivalry, illness and the desire for everyone to find their own happily ever after. Growing up the only child of divorced parents she longed for sisters, brothers and a family that vowed to stick together no matter what came their way. Through her books, she’s created the families she wanted as that lonely child.

When she’s not writing Peggy is usually painting, crafting, scrapbooking or decoupaging old steamer trunks she finds at rummage stores and garage sales.

  7. The description of this book is well written. I could handle the idea of a body in the freezer is a comedy easier than a crime thriller since I just ate a sandwich from a deli.
