Your One Word / Books for Writers

NOTE: If you're seeing this message, that means I don't have power. I will return comments and visit blogs when I am able. Stay safe!

Update: I have power, and my house is safe.

The book I’m highlighting today was written for entrepreneurs and small business owners, but anyone can use the concept of One Word for their website, blog, business, etc. So why not discover the secret power of Your One Word?

I did!

First, what is One Word?

It is one word that defines you (who you are), your business, what you strive for in all you do, and what you want to give others. Just one word. It’s core selling at its best. Core selling is not talking about the features of a product (or book, such as page count, genre, etc.) or Benefit Selling (“an exciting afternoon’s read”), but what values you have and what you believe.

For Evan Carmichael, his one word is #Believe. It’s his core value, his personal mission statement.

Evan says, “Your one word is your core. It’s your guiding light. It makes all decisions easier…When you know your one word, you can make decisions that support your path…it will also help you to stay motivated.”

In this book, Evan demonstrates how other entrepreneurs discovered and used their one word to kick-start their businesses, make money, and (more important) make an impact.

I found my one word for my blog. It was actually always there, I just never realized how powerful it could be. My blog’s one word is #Sparks. When I started my blog, I wanted to provide sparks of inspiration and motivation through writing a novel, editing, publishing, and marketing. And that’s what I did, without even realizing it. My first blog post was “Catching a Spark,” and I even use sparks on my banner and my business cars, but I never truly embraced it. Until now. Check out my About page for an in-depth explanation on this.

To find your one word, read this book.

QUESTION: What do you think your One Word is?

49 comments:

  1. That's an excellent question. Maybe "persevere". Sometimes I want to give up when things get tough, but eventually I will kick myself in the rear (mentally, because physically would be problematic) and get on with things.

  3. Like Alex, I'm not sure what my one word is yet either. Maybe mine is more of a phrase....

We made it through Irma okay. Sending good thoughts your way, Chrys! Hang in there!

    1. A phrase could be shortened to a word. It's a good way to start and discover what your one word could be.

  4. I never thought about a one word sum-up. I could see multi-faceted, intense, or sweeping as possibilities.

I hope you stay safe during the hurricane!

  5. Hi Chrys ... I think Sparks is great for you and your blog etc. I guess mine would be 'positive' or 'inspirational' ... I think I'd go Inspirational - but perhaps I need something more unique ... cheers Hilary

  13. You got me thinking... I am evacuated but have heard my house is fine. Last year, Matthew did a number on trees, this year we had a lot of flooding especially in some of the lower homes along the marsh. I'm heading back in the morning to check things out.

    1. I'm glad your house is safe. My damage after Matthew to trees was more than with Irma. I'm sorry your area has flooding. I hope you were able to get back home.

Believe is a great one word. It's the one Evan uses, but each person can use it in their own way. :)

  15. Thinking of you. We were lucky. Still have power. My one word in abundance is EASE everything flows and grows. Had not thought of it in relation to writing. Maybe the same thing cause I want my writing to flow and grow in many areas for me.

Hope you get power back soon. Hugs.

  20. Hello. My name is Jan and I am visiting from Sandra Cox's blog.
I do hope that all is well with you Chyrs.
To pick my one word out of so many words...'middling." I would say that I am just average~

    My word....I'm thinking........

  23. If I had to pick a word, I'd say it was discover. Last year when I was making a banner for the blog, I wanted something catchy on it and came up with 'discovering creativity through words'. It fits so well because it combines writing and my artistic side.
